Hi! I was looking for a JS based media player to use instead of Flash. I was a little discouraged because of the comment about Linux support, bu I had already openend the demo link. Surprisingly, it works. It seems that Iceweasel 3.0.3 (aka Firefox, but in Debian) does have support for the player… Is the YahooMediaPlayer wikia outdated? Well, thanks anyway for the post and the music samples. I’m from Colombia and I like this kind of music, especially Jungle Book’s and Tipu Sultan’s.

Tayfun, Thanks for posting the info. This is really sad state. Look here for the definition of C grade broswers. Looks like they are not just living a decade ago, but also a little ambiguous with the bug part. uh!

OK, to anyone interested in the solution. Here’s the answer to my own question.

I should have looked at browser support at: http://yahoomediaplayer.wikia.com/wiki/How_To_Use .
It says there that none of the browsers for Linux are supported. For firefox, it specifically says that it is a C-Grade browser, which means:
“A C-grade browser is on a blacklist of platforms which are specifically unsupported. There are important bugs in support for that platform and no plans to fix them. In a C-grade browser the player hides itself and lets the original media link do the work. Clicking on the link will invoke whatever helper application you have installed in your browser. ”

I don’t know why YAHOO doesn’t support Linux, which has great market share in geeks.

Hi,

Firefox just shows file download dialog when I click on any of the mp3 files. I have given permission for the javascript to run, so what do yo think is the problem?

If I remember correctly, they had also launched a flash based player sometime ago.
Although I am not 100% sure, but I don’t think they used Flash this time. Maybe they are using quicktime plugin of the browser.
If you find out something, let us know. I am too lazy for it (plus loads of unfinished work)

How did they do that? Is it possible to write an enire media player in js? I don’t think so. I think they use flash or something for that. What do you think?
